Clinical care is the essence of palliative care and concerns the optimal management of physical, psychological and spiritual symptoms leading to improved quality of life for the patient and their family. Palliative care can be provided in any location including at home, hospital, nursing homes and hospices.
Assessment of patients' and families' palliative care needs is crucial and treatment should always follow evidence-based best practice. Interventions should be assessed using valid and reliable outcome measures. These should ideally be patient-reported outcomes (PROMs).
