About the EAPC Research Network
The European Association for Palliative Care Research Network (EAPC RN) is a daughter organisation of the EAPC and was founded by Franco de Conno in 1996 with the ultimate goal to conduct Pan European Prospective Studies. Networks of researchers and institutions are essential for palliative care research because the number of patients in each institution will be relatively small and insufficient for high quality research.
A cross-sectional survey of palliative care in Europe was organised by the EAPC RN. 143 centres in 21 countries provided data on more than 3000 patients. This survey demonstrated the great potential of palliative care research networks to work in a coherent and collaborative fashion across many different countries and cultures. Much groundwork has been done on which to build and develop international collaboration amongst palliative care researchers.
However, most of the activities in the EAPC RN have been within the area of consensus papers on e.g. treatment modalities, prognostication, syndromes and several different symptoms. Several papers published on behalf of the EAPC RN are important achievements within the network.
How to contribute to and how to utilise the EAPC RN
The EAPC RN is an important meeting point for discussions and exchange of knowledge within palliative care research, and organises the EAPC Research Congress each other year. There is also a EAPC RN Junior Forum which works as a platform for education, communication and collaboration between junior researchers.
Collaborators in the EAPC RN are those who actively take part in planning, conducting and publish EAPC RN research, and the EAPC RN provides a structure for collaborative research.
The EAPC RN is based on an open invitation for all health care professionals who see the potential in conducting European multicentre research, to take part in developing a platform for this type of research within the EAPC RN.
Affiliation with other organisations
To organise practicalities related to the different studies and research projects the EAPC RN has a close and important collaboration with the European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC) – http://www.ntnu.no/prc.

Professor Stein Kaasa (firstname.lastname@example.org) from Norway is the current Chair of the EAPC RN and has previously been the President of the EAPC. He is currently Professor of Palliative Medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Head of the Cancer Clinic at St. Olavs Trondheim University Hospital and Cancer Director of the Norwegian Directory of Health. He has extensive clinical and research related experience and has organised and lead many collaborative research projects.
