Patient-centered integrated palliative care pathways in advanced cancer and chronic disease (InSup-C)

InSup-C is funded under the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7-HEALTH-Improving the organisation of health service delivery, Project ref: 305555).

InSup-C aims to identify best practice in integrated palliative care (IPC) by examining models of care delivery across a number of European countries. The project will use a mixed methods approach to establish a taxonomy of IPC systems. It will also gather patient and carer views on their experience of engaging with and accessing services within some of the IPC exemplars. A further aim of the study is to explore the organisational, managerial, financial and regulatory aspects of IPC model projects.

The study will focus on people with advanced cancer and those living with advanced, chronic disease, specifically chronic heart failure and lung disease.

The work is organised in six work packages (WP) led by national consortium members, but to which all partners will contribute:

WP1: Project Management
This package is responsible for the overall co‐ordination of the project and takes care of the management of contractual, financial, legal, administrative and scientific issues.

WP2: Literature review of existing evidence for IPC initiatives in Europe
The systematic review (in three parts) will focus on evidence of integrated palliative care models across Europe in advanced cancer and chronic disease.

WP3: Taxonomy of IPC initiatives in Europe
This work stream will develop a taxonomy of existing general palliative care models across Europe and contribute to the identification of models and initiatives for integrated palliative care.

WP4: Experiences of patients and (informal) care providers with IPC
WP4 focuses on the service user and professional provider experience. As part of this researchers will follow patients and carers as they ‘journey’ through palliative care services.

WP5: Development of (requirements for) best practices in IPC in Europe
This WP will benchmark existing palliative care initiatives across Europe identifying requirements for best, good and promising practice and publishing a book of best IPC practice examples.

WP6: Dissemination
Dissemination is the responsibility of WP6 and will be carried out using a range of methods and vehicles throughout the project. These including a dedicated website where more information about the study can be found: http://www.insup-c.eu/
