Mission Statement
In recent decades, great improvements have been made across Europe in the provision of palliative care. Despite these improvements and advances in many other relevant areas, two important issues of personal interest remain inadequately addressed: certification in Palliative Medicine and the integration of palliative care with clinical haematology.
With regards to Palliative Medicine certification, the superb work done by the EAPC, led by Dr. Carlos Centeno, should be recognised. Unfortunately, many European citizens still cannot be sure that the palliative care team caring for them has the appropriate competencies to do so. As a result, the potential exists for suboptimal or inappropriate care leading to avoidable suffering and the general discredit of palliative care medicine.
A second issue of importance is the question of palliative care in patients with haematological malignancies. Personally, I have experience in the care of such patients and two years ago I set up an integrative multiple myeloma outpatients clinic with the clinical haematology service. I am very interested in exploring the relationships between Palliative Care and Haematology in Europe and identifying areas of improvement in this area of care.
Consequently, if I am elected as a board member, I will be particularly active in both of the aforementioned topics, or indeed other areas that the EAPC Board of Directors considers important.
